One of the guys in our office has only just returned back to work following being run down on a pedestrian crossing. amazingly he escapes with bruises and cuts, but also amazingly the police don't want to prosecute this woman who run him over and didn't stop for a couple of blocks. He's still limping and no-one knows if there's going to be any permanent damage. Also the crossing is next to his daughters nursery school. If he'd been on the return journey he would have had his little girl with him, and she probably wouldn't have survived being hit.
The what Ifs are really frightening, like his having his child with him, etc. Sometimes our minds go to that to scare the crap out of us or to remind us how lucky we are in a bad situation. Sometimes we have to look for the blessings in a bad situation to put it in some sort of perspective.
